Cancer Rehabilitation

Physical activity is a key component of cancer rehabilitation and has been described as a ‘wonder drug’ by Macmillan Cancer Support. People living with cancer can benefit enormously from physical activity and it a structured exercise programme should be part of every patient's treatment.

Get Active

Get Active is a digital physical activity service designed to maximize the successful outcomes of physical activity and support the longer term maintenance of lifestyle changes. Get Active is comprised of:

  • Patient portal - For logging and monitoring activity online
  • Activity Tracker - Wearable physical activity tracker
  • Mobile apps - Self-directed – for individuals to sync data. Directed – for health professionals to sync data on behalf of patients
  • Coordinator portal - To monitor activity of user groups and conduct surveys

Benefits of Get Active

The Get Active service will support cardiac rehabilitation by enabling:

  • A flexible, digital service which supports users 24/7 to be more physically active
  • Improved monitoring of physical activity levels so that a user is doing enough exercise but not too much
  • Objective physical activity data to support evaluation and evidence outcomes

The Get Active service will help support improved:

  • self-management of health and wellbeing among individuals
  • levels of physical activity
  • health outcomes as a result of a more physically active lifestyle

Costs

  • £2000 set up cost (for standard, off-the-shelf Get Active service)
  • £35 per user per annum (*minimum order 100 users)

Training on the ‘Get Active’ platform can be provided for £650 a day. This will include a detailed training manual for reference. In addition, ‘train the trainer’ services are also available in order to equip staff with the knowledge and skills to deliver training locally.

Implementation of ‘Get Active’.

The ‘Get Active’ service has been implemented as part of the NHS 24 programme Living it Up and used by patients referred through exercise referral schemes such as ‘Active Forth’ in NHS Forth Valley.
